In the southernmost end of Chattooga County a church that has witnessed much of the history of Chattooga County will be celebrating 175 years of ministry to the area. When Sardis Baptist Church in Chattoogaville was formed, Chattooga County didn't even exist. It would be three years later before Chattooga County came into being after being cut out of Walker and Floyd Counties. In fact, Sardis Baptist Church is older than the Southern Baptist Convention and the Georgia Baptist Convention and the Chattooga Baptist Association. Members of the historic church are planning a week-long celebration next week to mark the milestone in the church's history, culminating with the unveiling of a plaque designating the church as part of the National Historic Registry.
