Fifth graders in Chattooga County have learned a lot about Childhood Obesity. Chattooga County Extension Agent Rebecca Thomas told AM 1180 that last year 377 students took part in 17 C.O.P.P. (Childhood Obesity Prevention Program). Thomas said that the goals of the program align with First Lady Michelle Obama's "Let's Move" campaign to tackle childhood obesity in the United States. The classes were taught by staff from the Chattooga County Extension office and focused on eating correct portions, fresh fruits and vegetables and the importance of movement. The classes also showed children how "super size" portions affect their health. The classes were held in each of Chattooga County's elementary schools. The Chattooga County Extension Service was able to secure $15,000 worth of equipment and supplies to use for the program. Thomas said that data collected from the classes was sent to the University of Georgia and was part of state-wide statistics that were sent to the USDA. In the coming year the classes will continue along with three county-wide events focusing on childhood obesity. Thomas told AM 1180: We are looking forward to another successful program year. Research shows that when we instill positive eating practices / habits at a young age, that our overall health later in life will be much better! Health is not about dieting – it is about health life style choices and habits. |
